Author of 'Fat Boy Chronicles' To Visit Riverwood Charter School
Michael Buchanan will be at the school on Dec. 4 as part of Riverwood International's 2nd Annual Bullying Awareness Week.

Michael Buchanan, co-author of the book and screenplay “The Fat Boy Chronicles,” will be at Riverwood International Charter School next month as part of the school’s 2nd Annual Bullying Awareness week.
Buchanan will discuss his award-winning film with Riverwood ninth graders on Thursday, Dec. 4.
Taking place Dec. 1-5, Bullying Awareness Week will feature daily announcements providing more information about what bullying entails, why students should help create a bully-free school and helping students become more aware of ways to prevent bullying.

Additionally, the Counseling Center will provide “No Bullying Zone” posters to hang throughout the school.
Last year’s students and faculty took a Bullying Assessment survey to examine the perception of bullying at school. The results indicate 18 percent of female and 12.5 percent of male students reported bullying incidents on campus.

These numbers are high enough to warrant the continuation of bullying awareness education. The survey results also show the most common places for bullying to occur were the cafeteria, hallways and in the classroom.
Riverwood’s Counseling Center will survey the current freshman class and compare their answers with those of last year’s ninth graders.
