Police Blotter: Man Exposes Himself To Kroger Employee

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Editor’s note: the following incidents were taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department’s Weekly Wrap Up compiled by Capt. Steve Rose, which contains some — not all — of the incidents that occurred Aug. 11-25:

Arrests

• 3000 block Sandalwood Drive, 30350, 8/19: A 44-year old man said that an acquaintance named Fred took his Apple iPhone from him sometime after midnight. The phone’s GPS was activated and officers found it, and Fred, lying on the ground behind a bench at Roswell and Roberts Drive. Fred had the phone that was beeping with the GPS signal. He was arrested. Fred and the victim had met earlier and exchanged numbers. Fred called and the victim picked him up and returned to his residence for an evening encounter. The victim fell asleep and Fred absconded with the phone. He was taken to the Fulton County Jail.
• 5600 block of Dupree Drive, 30328, 8/11: A patrol officer spotted a car that had taken a sudden turn on Old Powers Ferry Road. The officer followed and noted that the driver did not maintain the lane. The driver then ran the stop sign on Dupree and Old Powers Ferry in an attempt to elude the officer. The driver drove into a driveway. He and one other suspect fled from the car. The driver, a juvenile, was later found in the 6200 block of Powers Ferry Road and taken into custody. He told the cops that another juvenile had given him the car. The officer was informed the car had been stolen from Cardigan Circle (Stoneington Condos) a short time earlier, connected with a burglary. The car had not yet been reported stolen. On the juvenile was a Visa debit card, not in his name, and some marijuana.
• 227 Sandy Springs Place (Kroger), 30328, 8/12: Officers were called to the store in reference to an indecent exposure. A lookout was given on a black male, striped shirt, torn jeans and Timberland Boots. A second officer spotted a man, matching that description, running from the rear of the store, towards Sandy Springs Place. The man was caught and detained in custody while they spoke to the victim, a bakery employee of the Kroger. She said the man came up to the bakery counter. When she looked, she saw that his penis was exposed. She told him to leave and she walked to the rear of the store. She said that later, about 30 minutes, she was leaving and again saw him outside, and he confronted her, then ran when she called the police. The suspect said he wasn’t exposing himself but rather adjusting himself at which time his penis could have “accidentally come out.” He said he wears his pants “sagging” style, and there just happened to be a large hole in the left, front of the pants.
• 7000 block of Spalding Drive, 30350: One man is in custody, charged with the Aug. 1 carjacking that occurred on Spalding Drive. The suspect was arrested in Roswell on an unrelated vehicle pursuit. A phone lineup got him identified in connection to the carjacking. He is charged with robbery and motor vehicle hijacking. Cellphone records were part of the evidence used against him.
• Two felony warrants have been issued for a woman who used another’s bank card number to order
  merchandise on the Internet. She took possession of the items at the Intown Suites. She will be charged with financial identity fraud and criminal receipt of goods fraudulently obtained.
• 700 block of Willow Creek Drive, 30328, 7/30: Arrest warrants have been obtained for a suspect who stole over $3,000 in electronics from a home. The items were tracked to a Game Stop Store in Henry County.
• Brandon Ridge Drive, 30328, 8/10: A 49-year-old man was arrested and held with no bond on a bond violation stemming from late July stalking complaint filed by the suspect’s former wife.
• A man was arrested after swiping a bottle of Crown Royal at the Parmaas Wine and Spirits Shop at 6633
  Roswell Road. The man took the bottle from the box but left the box. ID fingerprinted the box and ID’d the suspect. Warrants are pending.
• Hammond Drive, 30328, 8/16: A patrol officer spotted a U-Haul truck around 1:45 a.m. on Dunwoody Place, which happens to be an area where several storage facility thefts have occurred. He ran the tag that came back stolen from Raytown, Missouri. Calling for assistance and backup, the officer followed the truck until it was pulled over. A male and female were the occupants and had several pre-paid cards. The rest of the story: The subject’s true identities revealed that they were fugitives, wanted by the FBI for drug trafficking, prostitution, and identity theft. The male was reportedly on the command staff of a violent street gang in St. Louis.

Robbery

• A landscape crew doing work at 300 Carpenter Drive said that on the 22nd, he saw two black males exit an older black sedan. One took a leaf blower from his truck. The victim said he surprised the suspect who raised his waistband to reveal that he had a gun. The two men left in the car. The suspect was in his 20’s, 5’9” with a thin mustache.

Burglary

• 600 block of Edgewater Trail, 30328, 8/11: Alarm activated, officers found evidence of forced entry. It appears the residents were out of town at the time.'
• 900 block Heards Ferry Drive, 30328, 8/20: Someone entered the home sometime between 2 and 3:15 p.m. The burglar went through the house looking around, evident by the drawers pulled out, etc. At the time of the report, nothing was said to be missing.
• 6450 Powers Ferry Road, 30339, 8/21: Someone forced entry to the Rio Bravo Restaurant overnight. Missing is a small safe containing a small amount of cash.
• 100 block of Maryeanna Drive, 30342, 8/23: Someone forced entry to the home through a door and removed several jewelry items.
• 1000 block of Glenridge Stratford Drive, 30342, 8/20: Someone pried a door open to the apartment and entered sometime between 5-8 p.m. while the victim was away.
• 4600 block E. Conway Drive, 30342, 8/17: The resident reported that someone accessed the home during the overnight hours. Forced entry was found on one of the rear windows. Several jewelry items were taken.
• 6900 block of Roswell Road, 30328, 8/18: A man reported that he received a text from another man he knew that said something to the effect that he should go home and look in his closet. He did so and found his mother’s ashes and a belt missing. The caller said when he (caller) got his items back he would return the ashes and belt.

Thefts

• 227 Sandy Springs Place 30328 8/24: An 88-year-old woman said that while shopping at Kroger, someone took her wallet from her purse. A credit card was later used at a Staples Store in Cartersville.
• 6345 Powers Ferry Road, 30339, 8/24: A 29-year-old woman said someone entered her room at the Wyndham Hotel and took an iPad and Beats headphones.

Over the past couple of weeks, the district cops and street crimes, along with traffic units, have concentrated on the “hotel district” of Sandy Springs, mostly the Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive area. There were a number of tickets issued, 164 or so, a couple of DUI arrests and about 10 arrests for various misdemeanors. The focus was on the reduction of thefts from cars in the hotels. The number of thefts in the hotels dropped significantly. What this means is that the scope was widened and we had some outlying areas hit, including the 5500 block of Glenridge Drive, around the Nevadan and Glenridge-Stratford Apartment areas. The same rules apply folks, take it out of your car — especially at night.

Assault

• 5800 block Kingsport Drive, 30342, 8/19: A 46-year-old man reported that around midnight, he and his roommates were in the apartment when they heard a knock on the door. He opened the door and saw a white female who told him that she needed $120 and would exchange sex for the money. He declined and closed the door. Minutes later someone knocked again. He opened the door at which time 3 to 4 black males forced entry. He said he was hit in the head by one of the men. He then fled the apartment however his roommates were still inside. He called the police who arrived just after midnight. He said the suspects were in their 20’s. The woman was thin, 20’s, long black hair. He is missing his Mexican Consulate ID, phone and credit card. None of the residents had cash on them.

Fraud

• New Northside Drive, 30339, 8/24: Check fraud
• A 22-year-old woman reported she was contacted by a phone, by a man who said he was an FBI agent who had a warrant for tax evasion (See the clue?). He told her to go to the store and get several Apple iTunes cards, $1,000 each, and give him the codes. She paid over $12,000 in iTunes cards to this crook. Unfortunately, the money came from a joint account with her parents so they got the shaft too. Capt. Steve Rose says: The FBI isn’t interested in your tax bill unless the evasion amounts to well over the few thousands dollars that she probably owed, if that much. The IRS is the Department of Treasury. Why would they want iTunes cards? I hate this more than anything else because these crooks are parasites, ruining people but for goodness sake, common sense should come into play here at some point.
• A man reported that his home is for sale and he discovered that someone removed the for-sale
  sign and put it in the bushes on several occasions. He also noticed that he was receiving mail addressed to someone he did not know. He told the postal carrier about this and increased his security by adding a video camera. FedEx delivered a package that he suspected of being credit card applications. He believes the previous mailing were too credit card applications. On the 19th, his neighbor saw a car parked in the cul-de-sac. He confronted two people who were walking around the home. They quickly left. The neighbor did not call 911. The car is a black Toyota, Florida tag, Dollar rental. They were obviously looking to intercept the mail.
