The seat was vacated earlier this month when Graham McDonald qualified to run in the State House District 52 race.

Burnett has been heavily involved as a community volunteer in the city, including serving as member of the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors for the past eight years (two of which as board chair) the city’s Next 10 Strategic Planning Committee and the Economic Development Advisory Council.

He's also a member of the Board of Trustees at Holy Innocents Episcopal School where and wife, Karen, have attended as long-time members.

Burnett is also on the board of the YMCA’s Camp High Harbor, and he is currently leading an initiative to build a new youth camp at Lake Lanier in north Georgia.

Previous volunteer work includes holding a board position on the Sandy Springs Conservancy and on the citizen’s advisory committee for City Springs, which advised city leaders on key issues such as architectural design and economic viability for the project.

The city is hoping to hold the special election to fill the vacant seat in conjunction with the May 24 primary.
