Driver Charged In Hit-And-Run Crash On I-285

The median wall near the Glenridge Drive interchange was hit so hard that debris was scattered across east and westbound lanes.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- The driver of a pick-up truck has been charged in connection to an accident that sent debris flying across Interstate 285 just before daybreak Friday.

Police have charged Tye Trimble, 42, with hit and run and driving with a revoked license, said Sandy Springs police spokesperson Capt. Mike Lindstrom.

Lindstrom said Trimble told police that he "fell asleep at the wheel" of the vehicle just before 5:30 a.m. Aug. 12 and struck a box truck on the westbound side of I-285 near the Glenridge Drive interchange.

That collision caused the box truck to strike a couple other vehicles and the median wall.

"The median wall was hit so hard that it knocked debris into the eastbound lanes," Lindstrom said, adding that's why all lanes of I-285 had to be closed.

However, Lindstrom said Trimble did not stop for the accident, and was later picked up during a traffic stop along Kayron Drive in the city.

Trimble, along with the driver of the box truck and another motorist, were transported with minor injuries in connection to the accident.

Lindstrom added Trimble could face additional charges once it's determined how the accident unfolded.
