The following information was taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department's Weekly Wrap Up.

Editor's note: the following incidents were taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department's Weekly Wrap Up compiled by Capt. Steve Rose. This week's wrap up contains some of the incidents that occurred April 15-21:

Robbery

  • 5930 Roswell Road, 30328, 4/18: A man reported that one of his employees robbed him at the time he was writing the employee a check for work done. He told officers that he deducted $100 from a $467 check due to expenses he inherited trying to wire the money to the employee. He called the employee and arranged to meet. During that time, the employee became angry over the $100 deduction and reached for something in his waistband. A weapon was not seen but rather implied. As the employer was writing the check, the employee snatched the checkbook and ran. Capt. Steve Rose says: Well now, that wasn’t too bright. One phone call later, the check you snatched is no good and the others you stole are no better.

The name on the check had been changed to another name prior to the deposit. The detectives are researching the revised name on the check and looking at bank video. Capt. Rose: In most cases, this is an act of desperation, given that the check was intercepted almost at
the place where it left the office. Bank video will give the detectives a good look and comparison with the depositors information on the check. I figure there is an arrest on the horizon.
  • 100 block of Spalding Drive, 30328, 4/16: The 86-year-old victim received a call that her grandson had been arrested in Florida. She could secure his release if she paid $4,000 in Walmart gift cards, paying over the phone. She complied, sending $1,000, confirming the money was taken. The following day, she received another call requesting additional funds. She became suspicious and confirmed her grandson was not arrested in Florida. Capt. Rose: How many times have you read this scenario in the Wrap Up? It is sad, but the clues are screaming at the victim. Keywords: gift card!
  • 6065 Roswell Road, 30328, 4/17: The caller, an employee of Signature Bank, reported someone attempted to open an account using a deceased person’s name and info. A second deceased person’s name was used in another attempt. Both deceased were from the Fayetteville.
  • 200 block of Marsh Trail Circle, 30350, 4/17: The victim is moving to Ohio and placed an ad on a website looking for a roommate in Ohio. He received a response from a man who said he was an auditor from Hawaii. He sent a check to the victim for $5,000. The victim then wired $4,670 for reasons the report didn’t go into. He found out later that the $5,000 check was fake, and he was out the funds and his account frozen due to the fraudulent activity. Capt. Rose: Here is the way not to be taken in this manner. Always wait until the check clears the bank. There is no rush!
  • 7000 block of Landowne Drive, 30328, 4/17: The caller said he used a taxi from the airport to travel home and paid with his AMEX corporate card. He discovered a second charge of $70 on the same card with the same transaction number used at an Amoco in College Park. He suspects the driver — a good bet.
  • 4700 block of Treelodge Pkwy, 30350, 4/17: The caller said that, upon checking his credit history, he found a 2014 account with the Art Institute of Atlanta that was fraudulent.
  • 6065 Roswell Road, 30328, 4/17: A bike patrol officer found a backpack at the edge of the sidewalk containing a black folder with loose paper that contained handwritten 16-digit credit card numbers. The written down information contained expiration dates, CVC numbers, names, addresses and phone numbers. Since the officer suspected the numbers were perhaps involved in fraudulent activity, he did some research of the credit card numbers. He then spoke to several owners of those credit card numbers and all of the persons he spoke with confirmed to him that they were working with a debt collection company to resolve debt. Each of the persons said they had not been victims of fraud. The officer found a receipt with a woman’s name on it, possibly the owner of the backpack. The officer noted several emails from “Direct Recovery,” which he found to be a debt collection company in Sandy Springs. He went to the address at 6065 Roswell Road and confirmed the company is based in an office. He went there and spoke to the staff, one of whom had the same name as the person’s name found in the backpack. The woman explained that she works for the debt collection company and, while on the phone, writes the information down onto loose paper. That information was in her backpack while she was at the bus stop. A friend pulled up and offered a ride and, according to her, pulled off quickly before she could shut the door. She said the backpack must have fallen from the car at that time. There are no frauds related to the credit/debit card numbers, but each card holder was in serious risk with detailed information compromised by the carelessness of this employee of Direct Recovery. Not good.

It appeared nothing was taken nor any forced entry made to the doors or windows.
