As one of the founder of the city of Sandy Springs, Young co-chaired the Zoning and Community Development Task Force, served on the Mayor’s Charter Review Commission and was president of the Sandy Springs Council of Neighborhoods for eight years.
In 2005, Mayor Eva Galambos appointed Young to serve as one of the two inaugural judges of the Sandy Springs Municipal Court, a post he held for more than eight years before stepping down in 2014.
“My experience as a civil and environmental engineer, attorney and city judge gives me a unique perspective on managing responsible and sustainable growth,” said Young. “As a candidate for city council, I believe we need to ensure smart growth — growth that is well planned and properly designed — not growth at any cost.”
To that end and in order to remain completely independent, Young said he will not be accepting any donations to his campaign.
In addition to his strong commitment to remain independent and support smart growth, Young favors innovative transit alternatives as part of the solution to growing traffic congestion.
“Every citizen is impacted by development that changes our environment, adds traffic and creates higher densities,” he added. “The people of Sandy Springs enjoy an incredible quality of life that will be even better as our new city center – City Springs - emerges. We must ensure that this vital heart of our city is both accessible and sustainable.”
A Kentucky native, Young earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Georgia Tech. He is an alumnus of the founding class of Georgia State University’s Law School. Prior to starting his own law practice in 1997, Young served as corporate counsel for Law Companies Group, Inc., an international engineering consulting firm whose focus was construction, environmental and commercial development.
Young has been married 25 years to Atlanta native Kyle Young. They are members of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church and have one son, who graduated from Riverwood International Charter School and is currently attending the University of Georgia.
