Former Spelman College President Kicks Off Frankly Speaking Series

North Springs Charter High School's new initiative seeks to provide students and parents with the tools needed to discuss complex issues.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Former Spelman College President Dr. Beverly Tatum will be the first guest to take part in North Springs Charter High School's Frankly Speaking series.

The first installment will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 in the school's media center.

“Our goal with Frankly Speaking is to bring a wide variety of speakers to North Springs to share insight, foster discussion and offer strategies that parents and teens can use to discuss important issues affecting their lives,” said Shelly Michael, parent member on the School Governance Council and chair of the committee organizing the series. “ We are very excited to have someone of Dr. Tatum’s stature come to North Springs as our first speaker.”

The conversation with Dr. Tatum, author of several books including the critically acclaimed, "Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race," will be in a question and answer format moderated by North Springs Governance Council Chair Mindy Binderman, Executive Director of GEEARS - Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students, and a friend of Dr. Tatum.

issues,” Binderman said. “It should be a wonderful opportunity and we hope, help parents, students, and all of us, be able to have an open and honest conversation. Dr. Tatum brings such a wealth of professional experience.”

Before serving as president of Spelman, Dr. Tatum previously served as president of Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, former chair of the school’s Psychology Department, Dean of the College and Vice President for Student Affairs, overseeing the offices of Dean of Students, Religious and Spiritual Life, Career Development and Health Services.

She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Wesleyan college; and master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan. She also has obtained a master's degree in religious studies from Hartford Seminary.
