The school system on Thursday revealed Dr. Jeff Rose, current superintendent of the Beaverton School District in Oregon, has been named the finalist for Fulton County schools superintendent position.
Dr. Rose, 43, has led Beaverton’s schools for the past five years and prior to that spent three years heading the Canby School District, also located in Oregon.

“Dr. Rose meets the criteria set forth in our recent community survey that asked parents, staff and other stakeholders what they want in their next superintendent,” said Linda McCain, president of the Fulton County School Board. “This job requires a skillset often found among the top CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and the board has been diligent in making this choice. We are confident we have the right new leader to help us continue to close our achievement gap and build on our current strengths.”
This latest selection comes on the heels of Philip Lanoue of the Clarke County School System withdrawing his name amid controversy surrounding how the district handled allegations that a student was allegedly raped at a high school.
A suburb of Portland, the Beaverton School District has 41,000 students in its 51 schools with similarities to Fulton’s diverse population and student achievement. Beaverton is about half minority with students speaking 94 languages whereas Fulton is about two-thirds minority.
“I am honored to join Fulton County Schools," Dr. Rose said. "I will be committed to serve and lead in a manner that builds on the past success, trust and forward trajectory that this district has shaped. "Coming to Fulton County is more than a professional decision. As a husband and father of two children, the schools and community will be a great benefit for my family.”
Dr. Rose and his wife, Lisa, have a 12-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son who will attend Fulton schools. Dr. Rose believes nothing is more important than the health, safety and welfare of students.
“That is first and foremost,” he says. He brings with him the philosophy he practices in Beaverton, which is included in the district’s mission statement: “Empowering all students to achieve post-high school success.”
“The Fulton County School Board has demonstrated to me their vision, sense of urgency and belief in student potential,” he says. “I am grateful to join the team and will be dedicated to continual progress on behalf of students.”
Dr. Rose is no stranger to former Fulton superintendent Robert Avossa, who left last year to become superintendent in Florida’s Palm Beach County School District.
Both Dr. Avossa and Dr. Rose are members of the Large Countywide and Suburban District Consortium made up of nearly 20 school districts from 11 states. They rank among the most successful school systems in the nation on a variety of outcome-based metrics of student success, according to the Education Counsel and AASA (The School Superintendents Association).
“I truly enjoyed my four years as superintendent of Fulton County Schools and am happy the board selected Jeff Rose to lead the district,” Dr. Avossa said. “Having worked with Dr. Rose on several important national committees, it is clear he has a deep passion for ensuring all kids learn and reach their full potential. He has found a way to support traditional educational values while being innovative and strategic. Fulton County Schools has an optimistic future with Dr. Rose.”
Dr. Rose has a doctorate in Educational Leadership and a master’s degree in Teacher Education from Lewis & Clark College in Oregon and a bachelor’s degree in Education from California State University, Long Beach.
Following a 14-day public comment period, which begins Thursday, the board plans to formally tender the position to Dr. Rose with a three-year contract and $295,000 annual salary. If accepted, he will join Fulton County Schools beginning June 1, 2016.
