Next week, Sandy Springs and Fulton County leaders will celebrate the opening of a new bocce ball court at the Dorothy C. Benson Senior Multipurpose Complex in Sandy Springs.

The celebration will include an inaugural game competition between local officials and seniors. The event will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 24 at the complex, which is at 6500 Vernon Woods Drive NE.
Participants in the opening of the new court will include Fulton County District 2 Commissioner Bob Ellis, County Manager Richard ‘Dick’ Anderson, members of Friends of Benson, Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul, Sandy Springs City Councilman Gabriel Sterling, Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Director Ronnie Young and other Fulton County and Sandy Springs officials.

Bocce ball is considered one of the world’s oldest sports. The game involves two teams rolling/throwing hard plastic balls down a dirt, gravel or crushed granite court, with the goal to be the closest to a smaller ball, known as the boccino or pallino.
Bocce has grown in popularity in the United States. According to the United States Bocce Federation’s website, there are currently more than 25 million Bocce enthusiasts throughout the United States.
