GDOT Plans GA 400, I-285 Work Again This Weekend

Motorists are encouraged to avoid both highways as crews and contractors will continue their push to wrap up this year's construction.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is once again advising motorists to avoid Interstate 285 and Georgia 400 again this weekend.

Crews and contractors will continue their push to wrap up the 2014 construction season this weekend on both thoroughfares.

Weather permitting – and there is a reasonable chance of rain throughout the weekend – crews will continue work on several major projects:

  • Two inner loop lanes and one outer loop lane on I-285 between Roswell Road and Peachtree-Dunwoody Road in Sandy Springs will be closed throughout the weekend for sign structure installation;
  • Concrete slab replacement on I-285 will require a continuous 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15 closure of two southbound (outer loop) lanes between South Cobb Drive and Bolton Road in Cobb County;
  • Sign work along I-285 between Glenwood Road and Covington Highway will necessitate two continuous northbound lane closures all weekend in DeKalb County;
  • Bridge overlay work will require various lane closures at the I-285 interchange with Interstate 85 throughout the weekend in south Fulton County.

Additionally, GDOT will shift traffic east and west bound Northridge traffic on to a new portion of the Northridge Road replacement overpass above Georgia 400. The shift is scheduled to occur Friday night after 9 p.m.

This portion of the new bridge will carry all traffic for approximately 10 months while an additional part of the structure is built. Motorists exiting Georgia 400 should be aware of new ramp configurations on to Northridge. In addition, there will be no sidewalk across the bridge during this last phase of construction, although the final bridge will feature a sidewalk.

GDOT also advises contractors will close two northbound lanes of Georgia 400 in the vicinity of the former toll booth from 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 until 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 for final paving, weather permitting.

Lengthy delays are likely and Georgia DOT advises those who must travel I-285 to call 511 or consult 511ga.org before departing to learn current work status and traffic conditions.
