Heritage Sandy Springs Celebrates Declaration of Independence

The organization will present a three-part lecture series on the American Revolution.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- To mark the 240th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Heritage Sandy Springs will present a three-part lecture series on the history of the American Revolution.

Discussions and interactive workshops will include an overview of the war, medicine and health, documents of the war and a “please-touch” display of artifacts from the 18th century. The lecture series is free and open to the public.

In 1836 James Hopper, a veteran of the American Revolution, was buried in an unmarked grave at the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.

More than 180 years after his burial, Hopper’s grave was identified, and a ceremonial grave marking was hosted by the Sons of the American Revolution in association with Heritage Sandy Springs.

"To continue this rich tradition of remembering and commemorating our veterans is especially important during the 240th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence," Heritage Sandy Springs said.

Dr. Marty Moran, president of the Sandy Springs Physicians’ Book Club, and Melissa Swindell, director of Historic Resources and Education Programs at Heritage Sandy Springs, arranged the series, which highlights pertinent aspects of the American Revolution.

July 12, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

  • Dr. Moran, a retired physician, will open the series with an overview of major campaigns followed by a discussion of medicine and health during the War.

July 19, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

  • Terry Manning, former president of the Sons of the American Revolution, will showcase 18th century artifacts from the warfront and home-front, discussing their historical significance.

July 26, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

  • Closing the series, Dr. James Piecuch, PhD, professor of history at Kennesaw State University, will highlight the documents that were scripted during this period, ensuing our nation’s future as an independent country.

The American Revolution lecture series will be held in the Community Room at Heritage Sandy Springs at 6110 Blue Stone Road.
