Holy Innocents Athletes Commit To Universities

Holy Innocents' athletes Sam Asbury (left) and Rod Davis have signed with Georgia State and NC State.

Two outstanding Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School (HIES) athletes, Sam Asbury and Rod Davis, signed with universities this month.

Asbury will head to Georgia State University after graduation to play golf. Asbury was part of the Holy Innocents’ boys’ golf team that finished its season with an exclamation point last spring, tying for second place in the Class A state tournament at Forest Hills Golf Course in Augusta. At Sectionals, Asbury shot a 2-under and was the medalist.

“Sam basically just exploded last year,” said Coach Jim Griffin. “He really put up some good numbers.”

Rod Davis has signed with North Carolina State University for wrestling. Davis wrestled the entire 2013-14 season with an injury in his right shoulder and still managed to win the state title at 195 pounds at the Class A traditional wrestling tournament last February. Davis finished the season with a 35-3 dual meet record.

“His shoulder was an issue that simply made him the kind of athlete and person that puts him in position to win a state championship,” said Coach Stacey Davis. “He has a will to succeed.”

Holy Innocents’ wrestlers began their new season last weekend and were led, as expected, by Davis, who finished first in his weight class.
