HIES Girls' Hoops Team Suffers First Loss Of Season

Collins Hill prevails 51-44 in non-conference clash.

The Holy Innocents’ girls’ hoops squad suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night – the Bears fell 51-44 on the road to 6A power Collins Hill. HI is now 9-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

The game was much closer than the final score – it was a one or two point game throughout and HI had the ball down by only three with 13 seconds left.

“Collins Hill is a very good team and they’ve got a chance to win the 6A title,” Coach Tony Watkins said. “It was a ‘grind-it-out’ type of game where every possession was vital. In the end, I feel their depth hurt us – they played with 9 kids consistently while we only had 6 after Grace (Asbury) went down in the first quarter.

“Overall, the effort was there and we did a nice job defending in the paint, especially after the first quarter. However, they hurt us with the 3; they knocked down 7 on the night. We need to improve our execution on offense; that will be one of our primary focuses in practice this upcoming week. A loss is only a loss if we don’t learn from it. This was a great game for us.”

Looking at the scoring, Erika Cassell led with 16 points; Kaila Hubbard followed with 12. Aaliyah Milord scored eight and Kennedy Suttle and Khayla Pointer both totaled four.
