Historian To Discuss Civil War History in Sandy Springs
Professor John C. Inscoe will discuss little known details about the Civil War on Thursday at a Heritage Sandy Springs event.

A professor at the University of Georgia will bring his knowledge on little known details about the Civil War — including secret spies, historic firsts and hidden histories — to Sandy Springs.
John C. Inscoe will discuss Georgia’s Civil War history as part of an ongoing series commemorating the war’s impact on the city by Heritage Sandy Springs.
The event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 at Heritage Hall, located in the lower level of Heritage Sandy Springs at 6110 Bluestone Road.

Inscoe is the Albert B. Saye Professor of History at UGA, where he has taught for nearly 30 years. He is the author of several books about race, politics and the Civil War in southern Appalachia, and has edited or co-edited volumes on Georgia race relations, Appalachians and race in the 19th century, southern Unionists during the Civil War, Confederate nationalism and identity, produced as a tribute to colleague Emory Thomas.
His most recently edited book is The Civil War in Georgia (2011), a compilation of articles drawn from the online New Georgia Encyclopedia, of which he’s been the editor since 1999. Inscoe obtained his bachelor’s degree in history from Davidson College and both his master’s degree and doctorate in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
