Holy Innocents' Artists Strike Gold With Photos

Emily Ann Betts, Libby Bulley are school's first Scholastic National Medalists

Holy Innocents’ has brought home some gold in the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Senior Emily Ann Betts and junior Libby Bulley have become the first students in school history to win National Medals for photography in the prestigious competition.

Emily Ann shot “Bathing Beauties” last summer while in Iceland, and Libby’s work, "Mirror, Mirror," was originally photographed for a presentation at the school's Fall 2015 Speaker Series.

“To put this in perspective, nearly 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted this year,” said photography teacher Alice Thompson. “Receiving a National Medal places Libby and Emily Ann within the top 1 percent of all submissions!

“Our students join a legacy of celebrated artists and authors including Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, and Ken Burns.”

Scholastic's national celebration in New York City, June 1-3, includes an awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 2. Thompson and her students have been invited to attend.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have been recognizing the vision, ingenuity, and talent of American young people, and providing opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated, according to the organization’s website. The awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.
