Holy Innocents' Global Students Helping People at Home and Abroad

Students awarded funding for projects such as counseling for Atlanta's homeless and a creative writing program for underprivileged kids.

Five seniors from Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School (HIES) have been awarded $2,500 each to complete their Global Entrepreneurship Capstone Projects. Students plan the social venture plans and then present them to school panels. The projects that are planned the best, have originality, are mostly likely to make a lasting social impact, and have high student engagement are awarded funding.

“These projects give the students the opportunity to reflect on their experiences in a meaningful way, and apply what they have learned by choosing a real world social problem they want to fix, said HIES Director of Global Studies Erik Vincent.

Receiving funding this year were (pictured from left): Sydney Coleman for “Write Spot,” a creative writing program for underprivileged, elementary school-aged, Atlanta youths; Nicole Price for “Shine On,” a plan to deliver inexpensive, waterproof, and portable solar lanterns to a rural community in the Philippines; Savannah Smith for “Each One Reach One,” a counseling and mentoring plan for Atlanta’s homeless women; Matt Gates for “Hearing for All,” a project that will develop a low-cost hearing aid and hearing test; and Kira Donaldson for “Teach to Eat,” a plan to provide nutritional counseling to 15 families in the Bedford Pines community.

Holy Innocents’ three-year Program for Global Citizenship helps to develop students with the capacity to serve the world. The program centers on the cornerstones of servant leadership, diversity and inclusion, and citizenship. Students have an increased foreign language requirement and required junior and senior year electives, including a Global Citizenship Seminar in the junior year and the Capstone course senior year. Students also have the option to study abroad for a semester.
