When cross country coaches Stephen Jayaraj and Dunn Neugebauer tried to count the school records and HIES “firsts” after Saturday’s Asics Invitational in Douglasville, neither knew where to start. For starters, Warner Ray broke the individual mark with a 16:14.9 over the 5K course. Ray,Ben Davies and Ross Waters all ran in the 16s – making it the first race ever where three runners broke 17. The top five boys averaged 16:52 – another top mark, while no less than 21 male runners ran faster than 20 minutes, another school record. The girls weren’t outdone either – Jayaraj had almost every girl of the 18 who raced run personal records, led again by junior Claire Kelsey, who turned in a 20:01. “It was an incredible day,” Jayaraj concluded. “Our top five girls averaged 21:24 – that in itself might be a top school mark though we’re still checking the records. Regardless, the girls are running really strong right now.” Beginning with the boys, Davies followed Ray closely with a 16:29; Waters was close behind in 16:39. Four finished in the 17s – Braxton Lindley (17:17), Keegan Donahoo (17:42), Clayton Null (17:44) and James Devine (17:45). Eight-through-ten for HI were Kyle Murdock (18:12), Blake Barber (18:16) and Kenny Buckner (18:23). All of the above raced in the Championship Division – taking 14th of 27 overall and first among Class A schools. The girls also had good depth – Evan Null (21:19), Kaitlyn Love (21:23) Ileana Zeissner (22:02) and Lauren McBroom (22:10) rounded out the top five after Kelsey, while the next four coming in included Mary-Mac Hailey (22:16), Rachel McGovern (22:59), Annabel Ward(23:02) and Missy Ashbey (23:21). The girls, also in the Championship division, placed 16th among 20, third in Single-A. The varsity squads also competed in the Class A Division, with the boys running 10 more and the girls entering seven. Graham Thomas’s18:54 led the boys' pack; he was followed by Chase Rainbow’s 18:56. The next eight, in order, were Drew DeHaven (18:58), Troy Anders(19:18), Andrew Coggins (19:22), Reese Foster (19:25), Clay Milling (19:26), Will Epperson (19:41), Spencer Cross (20:01) andNate Davies (20:03). Megan Roddenbery paced the girls in the A race, finishing in 22:17. The next six in order were Megan Wilson, Kate Evans, Anne Claire Pittman, Sydney Coleman, Clarisa Colton and Annie Hudgins. The rest of the day included a JV boys race (eight runners), a JV girls (one runner) and the open race (three boys). Zack Henry made big news in the JV race, turning in a time of 18:47. “I’ve always known he had the speed, I just didn’t know when or if it would translate over into cross country,” Neugebauer said. “Apparently it did.” Behind Henry were Zain Bashey, John Crumpler, Joseph Pugmire, Taylor Addington, Dylan Cooper, Jimmy Arnold andHarrison McCrorie. Parke Faison competed in the JV race and ran well while Alex Boor, Travis Thurber and Emmanuel Wright finished strong races in the open. Looking ahead, the Bears will compete in the Coach Wood Invitational next weekend in Gainesville.
