Mt Vernon Highway at Sandy Springs Circle closed on Monday to accommodate construction related to road improvements for the City Springs development.

"We had traffic backups this morning, which we expected," city spokesperson Sharon Kraun told Patch late Monday afternoon. "While people knew of the closure, many still followed their normal routine, meeting up with the barricades and (were) forced to turn around."

Sandy Springs expects the intersection to reopen in the summer. In the meantime, motorists are strongly encouraged to find alternate routes and follow the posted detour signs.

"As motorists adjust their driving routes to align with the detour and we’re able to modify signals in that area to work with the changes, it should be easier to move around in the area," Kraun added.

For those who are unfamiliar with the area, here's a rundown on how you can maneuver your way around the closure:

Motorists traveling on Roswell Road wanting to connect with Mt Vernon westbound:

  • Turn onto Hammond Drive westbound to connect with Mt Vernon.

Motorists traveling westbound on Mt Vernon (towards I-285) from Roswell Road:

  • Detour onto Roswell Road southbound, turning onto Hammond westbound, reconnecting with Mt Vernon westbound

Motorists traveling eastbound on Mt Vernon (east of Sandy Springs Circle) towards Roswell Road:

  • Detour onto Hammond Drive eastbound to reach Roswell Road.
  • To reach Sandy Springs Circle – turn north on Roswell Road, then west onto Johnson Ferry Road, followed by a turn onto Sandy Springs Circle.

Motorists traveling east on Johnson Ferry Road (from Abernathy/Brandon Mill) wanting to connect with Sandy Springs Circle, south of the intersection:

  • Turn south onto Roswell Road
  • Reconnect with Sandy Springs Circle via Hilderbrand Drive

While the intersection will be closed, driveways to all businesses within that zone will be accessible, and retailers in the area will remain open for business during the construction period. Motorists are asked to use added caution when driving in the area and follow the detour routes.

Kraun noted the city will continue to monitor traffic, and Sandy Springs police officers will increase their presence in the area "while everyone gets used to the closure."

"And we’re asking for patience," she added. "We know it is an inconvenience for all."

Updates on the closure will be posted on the city of Sandy Springs' Facebook page, and and all lane and road closures throughout the city are listed on the road work advisory page.
