SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Leadership Sandy Springs (LSS) and its high school counterpart, Youth Leadership Sandy Springs (YLSS), are seeking outstanding candidates for their 2018 classes.

LSS serves as a professional leadership organization that develops, educates and connects community and business leaders in the Sandy Springs and Central Perimeter area. YLSS is now in its sixth year in developing the next generation of community leaders.

Both nine-month programs encourage civic engagement through building relationships and facilitating involvement in hands-on activities and projects.

Applicants for the competitive LSS program, which recently celebrated 30 years of cultivating leaders, need to live and/or work in Sandy Springs and demonstrate leadership experience, community or volunteer service and the desire to contribute to the future of Sandy Springs and the region.

The class year starts with an opening retreat, which focuses on leadership styles and team-building activities. Program days include honing leadership skills and learning from leaders about issues regarding local and state government, education, business, social services and the environment.

Additionally, the class will visit businesses, schools, nonprofit and civic organizations, along with organize service projects designed to assist nonprofits in the area.

For high school sophomores and juniors, YLSS offers students who either live or go to school in Sandy Springs leadership training and teamwork experience – along with a unique chance to explore how the community works.

YLSS students get a close-up look at the city’s government, environment, public safety, economy and social services. Throughout the school year, students learn through hands-on activities, including a cell phone scavenger hunt, acting as attorneys in a mock trial, mapping out a new town center with city planners and developers, touring the Fulton County Jail, developing a city budget and exploring the Chattahoochee River with a U.S. park ranger.

At the end of the year, YLSS students create and implement a group service project.

Nominations are accepted from community organizations, businesses and alumni, and interested individuals may also self-nominate. Applications should be completed and returned electronically by March 15 for LSS and March 22 for YLSS.

Applications for the Leadership Sandy Springs class are available online, as are nomination forms. Youth Leadership Sandy Springs applications can also be found on the organization's website.
