LifeLine Offers Free Treatment For Heartworm Positive Dogs

The service will be available for dogs that are adopted from the Fulton County Animal Shelter.

Treating a dog with heartworms can be expensive, costing anywhere from $500 to $1,000, so shelter dogs who have heartworms are often overlooked at adoption time.

Now potential adopters can consider adopting a heartworm positive dog without worrying about the expense.

Since LifeLine Animal Project believes that all shelter pets deserve great homes, we’re offering free heartworm treatment for any heartworm positive dog who gets adopted from one of our shelters! After adoption, the new pet parent simply makes an appointment to bring their dog back to the shelter for treatment, and the dog will be treated at no charge.

All dogs, even those who spend most of their time indoors, should be on heartworm prevention medicine, since it only takes a bite from one carrier mosquito to give the dog this potentially fatal disease. The only way to prevent heartworm disease is by giving your dog heartworm prevention medicine, which must be acquired from a licensed veterinarian. And the only way to detect heartworms is to have your dog tested annually.

LifeLine Animal Project offers heartworm testing for only $20 at our low-cost vaccination events or at the time of a pets spay/neuter surgery. For more information, please visit LifeLineAnimal.org.

LifeLine Animal Project’s Fulton County Pets of the Week: Timmy and Andre

Meet Timmy, a gorgeous three-year-old boy who has one blue eye and one brown eye and looks like a petite Huskie mix. Timmy weighs 27 pounds, and has great manners on a leash. He is very stressed out at the noisy shelter, but relaxes once he is out of his kennel and with someone he trusts. One volunteer says “Timmy is a personal favorite of mine. I take him out on a daily basis at the shelter, and he loves to cuddle, fetch tennis balls, and give hugs. He is quite shy but warms up if you take him for walks and pet him nicely.” Although Timmy is heartworm positive, LifeLine’s Fulton County Animal Services will treat him for heartworms for free once he is adopted, so he’ll be good as new!

Andre is an eight-month-old, 35-pound boy who is super intelligent. This sweet boy is an expert at playing fetch, and will bring the ball back and drop it in your hand. Andre arrived at the shelter already knowing to sit for a treat as soon as he sees one without even being asked! He is also very observant, tries his best to please and will give you his full attention if you whistle. He is one of the few dogs who always has a clean kennel, and he waits until he is brought outside to do his business. Come meet this smart boy today!

Timmy and Andre qualify for our June “Make Waves” promotion, so their adoption fees will be waved during June! Come meet these terrific boys today! Simply drop by the shelter, email adoptions@fultonanimalservices.com or call www.fultonanimalservices.com/adopt.
