Sandy Springs Students Win Optimist Club Oratorical Contest

The Woodland Elementary students recently won the competition held by the North Perimeter Optimist Club

SANDY SPRINGS, GA – Woodland Elementary School students Addison Rosenberg and Cray Brown recently won the Optimist Club of North Perimeter Oratorical contest based on a theme of “What the World Gains from Optimism.”

Addison Rosenberg for the girls and Cray Brown for the boys, were both awarded First Place Medals and plaques for the honor. In addition, both students will be sent to the zone level where they will compete against winners from other Optimist Clubs in the area.

The winner of the zone competition will be sent to the District level with the chance to win a scholarship, and then possibly on the Optimist International Regional/World Championship for a chance to win an additional $5,000 or up to another $15,000 scholarship.

“Both Addison and Cray did a wonderful job presenting their speeches about the questions posed to the participants,” Club President Gwen Gable said. “The members of our Optimist Club have no doubt that all the young men and women who participated in this competition, have a bright future ahead of them.”

The Optimist Club of North Perimeter has been participating in the Optimist Oratorical Contest for a number of years and has been active in the community since 1986.

Other programs and service projects that the Club is involved in include the Optimist Essay Contest along with collaborating with the Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks, to assist in their annual Special Olympics. The club also holds their annual Egg Hunt in April and Christmas Parties for the less fortunate.

Optimist International is one of the world’s largest service club organizations with 93,000 adult and youth members in 3,200 clubs in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico and throughout the world. The Optimist Oratorical Contest is one of the organization’s most popular programs, with more than 2,000 clubs participating annually.
