Man Snatched Purse From Elderly Publix Shopper: Blotter

The following information was taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department's Weekly Wrap Up.

Editor's note: the following incidents were taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department's Weekly Wrap Up compiled by Capt. Steve Rose. This week's wrap up contains some of the incidents that occurred March 31 through April 5:

Robbery

  • Purse snatching, 8725 Roswell Road, 30350, 4/2 (Publix): A 90-year old woman reported she was at her vehicle in the Publix parking lot when a white male snatched her purse, ran across the parking lot and got into a blue Mitsubishi Mirage G4 with a drive-out tag. The suspect was 25-30 years old, had dark hair and wore a blue shirt and jeans.

  • 100 block of Mystic Place, 30342, 4/4: Sometime between March 30 and April 4, someone entered the unoccupied home that was found unlocked with no forced entry. The sales agent confirmed the home was locked when last shown. A $2,000 Samsung stove was stolen from the home.
  • 6980 Roswell Road, 30328, 4/4: The resident reported he was away for one month and on return, found his apartment ransacked and several items including clothing and a laptop missing. A forced glass door was the entry point.
  • 4800 block Northland Drive, 30342, 4/4: The resident said she was gone April 1-3 and on return, found that someone stole cash and jewelry from her safe. She said she left the instructions on how to open the safe, on top of the safe. While she was gone, she rented the home to a movie production crew filming the sure-to-be-Oscar-nominated “The Bobby Brown Story.”
  • 6569 Roswell Road, 30328, 4/4 (Take-5-Oil Change): An employee responded to an alarm at his business and found a garage-door panel missing, big enough for a person to go through. He checked the video and saw a man coming from the area of Steak N Shake to the rear of the business at around 11:30 p.m. He entered through the panel, walks to the office, grabs something from the desk and goes to the safe, opens it and removes the contents. He then exits in the general direction from where he came in. The management believes they know the identity of the suspect: a former employee fired two months ago not on good terms.

Theft

  • 6345 Powers Ferry Road, 3033,9 3/31: A 28-year-old woman reported to police that she met a man whose name was either Marco or Dorico on a dating website called Plenty of Fish. She said his right leg was amputated below the knee and his left leg was in a cast. He arrived to her home in a Dodge Challenger, black with red stripes. The report goes on to say, “At his request, she withdrew $8,000 from her account in order to purchase a car. Before purchasing the car, he drove her to the Wyndham Hotel and asked her if she would go to his room and get his luggage, which she did, leaving the $8,000 in the car. Capt. Steve Rose: Think hard, now, and try to guess what happened.
  • 8100 block of Roswell Road, 30350, 3/31: A man reported his Mongoose Hot Shot was stolen.
  • 1100 Hammond Drive, 30328, 4/1 (Rite Aid): The manager said a white female between 20-30 years old took something and left without paying for it. She wasn’t sure what the woman took. The woman was wearing a plaid jacket, pink shirt and brown boots.
  • 7355 Roswell Road, 30350, 4/2 (CVS): The caller said a white male (identified) picked up a prescription and took a bottle of weight-loss pills from one of the aisles without paying for them.
  • 227 Sandy Springs Place, 30328, 4/3 (Kroger): Staff observed a man place items in his backpack, which was concealed from view. He was detained and later arrested for possession of $184 in store goods he did not pay for.
  • 7000 block of Twin Branch Drive, 30328, 4/4: The resident said just before 3 a.m., her dog began barking, so she let the dog out. That's when she saw a young black male in dark hooded sweatshirt in her driveway. She yelled at the man who got into her 2017 Mercedes and left, followed by a dark colored SUV. The victim’s car was tracked to I-20 and later to Oakland Drive in Atlanta. The car was not at that address, but an additional track led cops to Davage Street in Atlanta where they found the car, unoccupied and apparently undamaged. The investigation thus far has not revealed suspects.
  • 1050 Hammond Drive, 30328, 4/5: A patrol officer spotted a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the Extended Stay Hotel lot at 1050 Hammond Drive. The tag was checked and showed to be stolen from Budget Rental on March 25. Inside the car were two women who were in the process of exiting. Both women went into one of the rooms. The officer remained at the car confirming the match of the tag and the VIN. As he was checking the car, one of the two women returned and unlocked the car using the key fob. The officer questioned the woman who initially provided the story that her mother rented the car and she had permission to use it. However, she could not provide the rental agreement. The officer requested to speak with her mother and at that point, the woman began to noticeably fidget and had difficulty locating her mother’s number. She changed her story around as she tried to find a number for her mother, which took some time. The officer noted in the report that she typed the word “mommy” in her phone. The return text read “Who the (expletive) is this?” (Capt. Rose: Mommy in a bad mood?) The woman was arrested.
  • 100 block of Mystic Place, 30342, 4/6: The caller said two AC units were taken from a residential construction site.

Fraud

  • 200 block of Quiet Water Lane, 30350, 3/31: The caller said she returned from out of town and discovered a package containing a 22-inch weave that she did not order. Upon looking into the matter, she discovered that just under a hundred transactions were placed on her credit card before the card company notified her that the activity was suspicious. She added that someone left two handwritten notes, asking for a phone call because the packages were sent to her in error (The packages were addressed to the victim). The officer called the number several times with no answer.
  • 8601 Dunwoody Place, 30350, 4/2: The caller said company checks were forged. Someone tried to cash 22 checks for $99 each as well as a couple for over a hundred. The checks were stopped.
  • 1125 Hammond Drive, 30328, 4/2: The caller said that because of the Equifax data breach, his information was used for a loan in Macon and an apartment application at 1125 Hammond Drive.
  • 5800 block of Glenridge Drive, 30342, 4/2: The complainant reported someone forged a company check, writing it for over six-thousand dollars, and depositing it into a separate account. The bank was able to reverse the deposit, saving the complainant’s company from the loss.
  • 6615 Roswell Road, 30328, 4/2: The caller said someone used his Visa debit card at Publix at 6615 Roswell Road. The purchase was for a $2,504 money order.
  • 800 block of Camden Court, 30328, 4/2: The caller said a Chevron card was apparently lost and later found by someone who used the card beginning in February until March, racking up a bill just over $1,200.

Assault

  • 6420 Roswell Road, 30328, 3/31 (Flashers): Cops arrested a man after responding to a fight over the refusal to pay a dance for a $20 dance. The man became violent, assaulting staff members who then called the police. Officers arrested him, noting in the report that he was very verbally abusive to everyone around him. Alcohol was involved.
