Mercedes-Benz USA on Tuesday announced plans to relocate its corporate headquarters to the Atlanta area.

According to the company’s press release, the move to Atlanta is slated to ”better serve its growing customer base and strengthen the company’s position for long-term, sustainable growth.”

The company will move its executives and staff from Montvale, New Jersey, to a temporarily location in “Atlanta’s central perimeter on an interim basis.”

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz USA plans to build a new, permanent facility that would open in early 2017.

“Atlanta is a premier city which places us closer to our ever-growing southeast customer base, our port in Brunswick, Georgia, and to Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, our Alabama manufacturing facility, which accounts for half of the vehicles we sell here in the U.S.,” said Mercedes-Benz USA President and CEO Stephen Cannon. “For our employees, Atlanta offers a strong quality of life, terrific schools and wonderful cultural and recreational opportunities.”

The move, which will affect roughly 1,000 employees, is slated to start in July and will be phased in to help reduce any disruption to the company’s operations.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mercedes-Benz is possibly scouting areas within Fulton County, including sites near S.R. 400 in Sandy Springs. Additionally, the company’s move would relocate or bring roughly 800 jobs and invest $93 million into its Atlanta facility, the AJC reports.

The Development Authority of Fulton County on Tuesday voted to begin formal negotiations with the company.

Gov. Nathan Deal also praised the company’s decision to bring its operations to the Peach State.

“The relocation of Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. headquarters to Georgia is a huge win for our state,” Deal said in a statement. “This internationally renowned company is a pioneer in the automotive industry and I’m confident that its legacy of high-quality, innovative products will continue with the help of the Georgia’s pro-business environment and strategic resources. Much like the many other global companies headquartered here, Mercedes-Benz will find that Georgia’s community-based, community-driven support will benefit its employees during this time of transition. I look forward to building upon our new partnership in the years to come, and I thank Mercedes-Benz for entrusting its future success to Georgia.”

The company expects to provide additional detail on its plans by the end of the month.
