New Design Unveiled For Sandy Springs Fire Station No. 2
The fire station first opened 50 years ago in 1969 on Johnson Ferry Road, and needs to be upgraded to meet current public safety needs.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — The Sandy Springs community was given a preview into the new design planned for Fire Station No. 2 on Johnson Ferry Road. The fire station first opened 50 years ago in 1969 and needs to be upgraded to meet current public safety needs.
The new station is planned as a two-story structure. The 20,000 square-foot building will include several new features focused on safety and firefighter’s health. A 1,000-foot gym on the second floor will help keep firefighters in shape. A decontamination area with a separate HVAC and airlock system will provide a space for firefighters to change out of and clean dirty turnout gear. An infrared sauna will be installed to help with firefighters’ detoxification process. The facility will include a training stairway with a repelling wall and a confined space simulator, providing firefighters with critical training in-house. Currently, this type of training is done away from the station.
In the living quarters, the station will have both men and women’s bathrooms and private sleeping areas for personnel. The first floor will also contain office space for staff and a conference \ community room.

The new building will be constructed on the same property as the current fire station. As part of the new design, a six-foot wall will help separate the station from the nearby neighborhood, and the position of the building moved to allow a 25-foot buffer between the station and neighborhood.
Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung International Inc. created the design as part of the $351,700 contract awarded earlier this year.
