North End Redevelopment Open House Set For July 25

Citizen input will be solicited on ways to revitalize the north side of Sandy Springs.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — The city of Sandy Springs will hold an open house later this month to gather input from the community on ways to revitalize the north end of the city.

The open house will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25 at Sherwood Event Hall. There will be a short presentation followed by a visioning session. Mayor Rusty Paul at his 2018 State of the City address said creating a healthy retail environment and affordable housing opportunities on the northern side of Sandy Springs are top priorities for city leadership.

The low-density rental housing typical of the 1960s and 1970s, a declining retail environment, and "a lack of advancement found in other parts of the city are cited among reasons for the focused attention," the city said. A task force was named in March to lead the process.

The task force will focus on four sets of activities as part of their vision and planning:

  • Citizen engagement, including sessions with those living in the North End and those living elsewhere in the city to gain insight into both concerns and hopes for redevelopment and how to implement those improvements.
  • Work sessions to assess the North End’s current situation, exploration of different visions of what could be, considerations of obstacles, creating a draft vision and provide the City Council with a set of recommendations.
  • Create an organized way of bringing feedback into the task force’s work from landowners and businesses as well as nonprofit organizations involved with workforce housing.
  • Providing a written report of the task for findings and recommendations.

The July 25 open house is the first public meeting intended to solicit citizen input. The Sherwood Event Hall is at 8610 Roswell Road.
