North Fulton Resident Qualifies To Run For Fulton Sheriff

Ben Cowart, who lives in Johns Creek, will challenge incumbent Theodore "Ted" Jackson.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Johns Creek businessman and former reserve sheriff's deputy Benjamin “Ben” Miller Cowart II officially qualified on Monday to seek the office of Fulton County Sheriff.

Cowart qualified to run for the seat, currently held by incumbent Democrat Ted Jackson, as a Republican in the May 24 primary.

Two other Democratic candidates have also qualified to run for the seat: former Fulton County Sheriff Richard Lankford and resident Tommy White.

"We’ve got big problems on the south side of the county," Cowart said. "The city police departments on the south side are overwhelmed and the citizens are hurting. The law abiding citizens feel like they are under siege and have been abandoned. When I am elected, we will assist these cities attack this problem with all of us working together."

Ben Cowart announced his candidacy for Fulton County Sheriff in December 2015 and has spent the past few months meeting Fulton County residents and talking about issues with voters.

The Johns Creek resident's campaign has focused on several issues, including improving resources on the high crime areas, improving the jury duty process, fiscal accountability and addressing inter-department relations with the Fulton County Sheriff's Department.

“I’m excited about the future and this opportunity to serve the people of Fulton County," Cowart added. "As your sheriff, I will streamline red tape and cut costs and use existing resources where they are needed. I intend to always be looking for ways to improve our department for our constituents, our customers and our employees."
