North Springs Charter Awarded Grant To Purchase Science Equipment

A grant will be used by North Springs Charter High School to purchase sensing and data gathering devices so students can collect and investigate data in the classroom and in the field.

The Sandy Springs Society has awarded North Springs Charter High School a grant exceeding $10,000 to purchase state-of-the-art science equipment.

“We are thrilled to be able to award this grant to North Springs because it will benefit all students and enhance the school’s noted science magnet program," said Kate Dalba, Sandy Spring Society president. "It is a perfect fit with our mission of bettering our community through grants that support education."

The award will enable North Springs to purchase two classroom sets of sophisticated portable sensing and data gathering devices, known as Vernier LabQuest 2.

These devices will allow students to investigate and collect real data both in the classroom and in the field using leading-edge technology.

“This equipment will support North Springs' STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) leadership in Fulton County and the state of Georgia,” said Dr. Eddie Ruiz, North Springs Charter principal. “It will impact every student at NSCHS and enrich our entire science curriculum with hands-on science in the classroom and the field.”

According to North Springs science department chair Dr. Steven Moody, the potential uses for LabQuest 2 include:

  • Biology students using it to monitor ecosystems,
  • Chemistry students using it to measure conductivity, and temperature changes in reaction and acid-base reactions,
  • Physics students using it to measure energy transfer and,
  • Environmental science and earth systems students using it to monitor water quality for sustainability and viability.

“We were blown away by Dr. Moody’s passion for science and how the equipment will be used,” said Sandy Springs Society’s grant chair Nancy Bell. “This is the first time North Springs has applied for a grant and we are happy we were able to fund it. The grant process is very competitive.  We were impressed by the application submitted by the Friends of North Springs Foundation and even more so after talking with Dr. Moody and the science teachers at North Springs."
