North Springs Charter High Sends Teachers To Training With $9,300 Grant
Seven teachers were sent to the specialized training which focuses on strengthening freshmen's foundations.

From North Springs HS:Thanks to a generous $9,300 grant from the Sandy Springs Society, seven 9th grade North Springs teachers, Principal Scott Hanson and Assistant Principal Dr. Mulanta Wilkins attended the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Institute’s summer training in Tampa, Florida, to prepare for the start of the school year and North Springs’ new Freshmen Academy.
“Our Freshmen Academy is designed to be a smaller learning community with specially selected teachers, trained to provide a strong foundation of support for our 9th grade students to be successful their freshman year and throughout high school - and that’s what AVID’s proven practices are all about,” said Principal Hanson.
“This summer at AVID we were able to observe best teaching practices, bond as a team and put all our expertise in one room to develop and identify which AVID strategies were a best fit for our academy,” added Dr. Wilkins who leads the Freshmen Academy.

9th grade AP Human Geography teacher Kelly Olson agreed, “Being able to plan as a team at the conference was really important. Now across the Freshmen Academy all of us are using strategies that AVID has found helps students succeed – starting with being organized, effective note taking and engaged listening. “Plus,” she added, “Everyone needs a refresh on how to be a better teacher!”
This is the fourth grant the school has received from the Sandy Springs Society in the past four years.

Previous grants were given for science testing equipment for all science classes, student response (clicker) systems for all math classes, and to help fund a music technology classroom and recording studio for the music magnet and afterschool programs.
“This year’s grant for AVID training and implementation of AVID strategies, is so valuable because it benefits not only our newest Spartans but future Spartans as we continue to build on this model of student success,” said Hanson. “We greatly appreciate the Sandy Springs Society for their financial support and the Spartan Nation Foundation for their help writing the grant.”
