North Springs Charter Students Get Crash Course in Coding
Thirty students at the school in Sandy Springs took part in the Hour of Code event as part of Computer Science Education Week.
Thirty North Springs Charter High School students and teachers last week participated in the Hour of Code, joining more than 66 million global participants in an event designed to expose students to coding and careers in computer science during Computer Science Education Week.
Georgia’s Day of Code was held Dec. 10, and all Georgia students of any age and educators were encouraged to take one hour to learn to code. President Barack Obama kicked off the event nationally on Monday, the second year for the project, which previously drew 15 million students.
“I knew I wanted my students to participate and also any other interested students at North Springs,” said North Springs Web and Digital Design teacher Sallie Holloway, who, with the administration, decided to offer the Hour of Code as an after school party, the solution to a packed schedule for students taking end-of-course tests and preparing for finals.

“It was really successful,” Holloway said. “Students and staff learned visual programming, HTML and Javascript during the hour. It was fun, they were really interested and want to learn more.”
Students from FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) ACDC (Architecture, Construction and Design Club) and the Computer Science club helped mentor those attending the coding party along with Career Leadership Academy department chair, Scott Greb.
