National Merit Semifinalists, are those students that scored the highest in their state from among student who took the PSAT their Jr. year.
From North Springs Charter HS: North Springs Charter High School announced its four 2018 National Merit Semifinalists this week with what is becoming a Spartan tradition – a surprise lunch for semifinalists - seniors Claudia Chu, Jared Coffsky, Daniel Lopez and Eric Miller- attended by their parents.
“We are happy to do something special for you,” Principal Hanson said. “Being a National Merit Semifinalist is a big honor for you and North Springs. We’re proud of your academic accomplishments and look forward to the likelihood you will be named National Merit Finalists in February!” During lunch it was pointed out that all four Math/Science Magnet students are taking college level math at North Springs via Georgia Tech’s Distance Learning/Dual Enrollment program. Chu and Lopez are taking first year Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus. Coffsky and Miller are taking second year Applied Combinatorics and Differential Equations - as sophomores they took BC Calculus, allowing them to take first year college math as high school juniors.
National Merit Semifinalists, are those students that scored the highest in their state from among the more than 1.6 million students who take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) during the fall of their junior year. Georgia’s score rose a point this year to 220, making it among the states with the highest qualifying cutoff. Approximately 16,000 students from across the county are annually named National Merit Semifinalists. Chu, Coffsky, Lopez and Miller must now fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist round: earn an SAT score that confirms their PSAT qualifying test performance, complete a detailed application, write an essay and provide information about leadership, school and community activities.
