Northbound Lane of GA-400 To Close In Sandy Springs

The closure will allow crews to perform preliminary work for the I-285/S.R. 400 interchange reconstruction project.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- This week, contractors with the Georgia Department of Transportation will close one northbound lane and shoulder along a segment of S.R. 400.

The agency will close one northbound lane and shoulder from the Glenridge Connector to just north of the Spalding Drive overpass to allow crews to perform preliminary construction work for the I-285/GA-400 interchange reconstruction project.

The lane and shoulder will close nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31 through Friday, Nov. 4, the agency added.

Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, pay attention and watch for workers.

The massive transportation improvement project will improve safety and facilitate better traffic flow to accommodate the high volume of travelers passing through the interchange each day. Those improvements include:

  • About four miles of improvements beginning one mile west of Roswell Road and ending just east of Ashford Dunwoody Road on I-285;
  • Roughly five miles of improvements from just south of the Glenridge Connector north to the Spalding Drive area on S.R. 400;
  • Construction of barrier-separated collector-distributor lanes along I-285 and S.R. 400 to help reduce weaving, merging and accelerating/decelerating conflict;
  • Reconstruction of the Abernathy Road interchange;
  • Replacement of the bridge at Mt. Vernon Highway;
  • Reconstruction of existing ramps and bridges in the interchange area;
  • New flyover bridges; and
  • New connections to I-285 and existing interchanges.

Perimeter Community Improvement Districts has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 for the project.

Georgia DOT major construction on the project is expected to start in February 2017.
