Northside Hospital Receives 200 Infant CPR Anytime Kits

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Northside Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is providing families of newborns with a lifesaving take-home tool.

The American Heart Association recently presented Northside Hospital with 200 Infant CPR Anytime kits. The kits are being given to parents of babies admitted to the NICU.
“Babies born very early need additional special care after birth,” said Linda Kelly, RN, clinical manager of Northside Hospital’s NICU. “We want to give parents the knowledge and confidence to handle an emergency should it occur.”

Kelly said all parents of newborns at Northside’s NICU are required to take an infant CPR course prior to discharge.
The Infant CPR Anytime kits donation was made possible because of benefactor Nellie Axelroad of Atlanta. Axelroad told the American Heart Association she was honored to be part of helping train parents in infant CPR as it teaches the ability to save a life.
“Our goal is to train 20 million people in CPR by 2020,” said Kim Nickels, southeast community CPR manager for the American Heart Association. “We believe that everyone should know the lifesaving skill of CPR, especially parents who are taking babies home.”
Nickels said the kits come with a 20 minute video and a mini Baby Anne manikin that can be used by parents to train every caregiver, grandparents or anyone watching their child.
“This is one of the tools we are using to get to every single person to make sure that they are trained and can act in the chance that they are faced with an emergency,” she said.
