Open House Set For Mt. Vernon, Johnson Ferry Intersection Project
The city is considering whether to install dual roundabouts or a new grid network to provide traffic relief at the intersection.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — The long-running debate on how to improve one of the city's most congested intersections will continue early next month in Sandy Springs. The city will host public information open houses on March 8 to allow citizens to view concepts developed to improve the Johnson Ferry Road-Mt. Vernon Highway intersection.
The meetings will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 8 at Congregation B'nai Torah. Both meetings will provide the same information and displays, and each will allow attendees to review plans, ask questions and provide input.
Like many of these meetings, there will not be a formal presentation, but city representatives will be on hand to discuss the project and answer questions. The existing one-way alignment for westbound traffic on Johnson Ferry Road and eastbound traffic on Mt. Vernon Highway east of Roswell Road currently results in "significant operational and congestion delays for motorists," the city said.

To remedy this problem, the city has proposed two alternatives: a dual roundabout alternative and grid network alternative. The grid network alternative consists of two separate east/west corridors that can operate independently of each other. The roundabout alternative consists of two roundabouts. The first roundabout is proposed east of Johnson Ferry Road, Mt Vernon Highway, and west of Boylston Road. The second roundabout is proposed east of the Mt. Vernon Towers entrance and west of the Sandy Springs Public Library.
Sidewalks and enhanced pedestrian connectivity to City Springs, neighborhoods and retail are also included in the project plans. The proposed improvements are included in the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax program approved by voters in Sandy Springs and Fulton County in a referendum passed in 2018.
