The Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCIDs) ongoing efforts towards major transportation improvements as well as enhancing the walk-ability of the north Atlanta perimeter area has again been recognized by the PEDS Golden Shoe Award. Their current award-winning project is a pedestrian-friendly streetscape along Perimeter Summit Parkway, Lake Hearn Drive and Parkside Place.

“Our mission is to work continuously to develop efficient transportation services, with an emphasis on access, mobility, diversification and modernization,” said Yvonne Williams, executive director of the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts. “Being recognized by PEDs three years in a row demonstrates our support for pedestrian, as well as commuter and transit enhancements and improvements.”

The PCIDs straddle north central DeKalb and Fulton Counties, and encompass parts of three cities, Brookhaven, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs, including the headquarters of several of Georgia’s leading Fortune 500 companies and some of the most desirable communities in metro Atlanta.

These PCIDs’ streetscape improvements include installing wide pedestrian sidewalks, in addition to existing roadway sidewalks, landscaping medians illuminated with pedestrian-scale lighting, and improved traffic signaling to allow safer crossing. Together these enhancements provide a functional amenity for area workers, shoppers and pedestrians, as well as achieving a consistent visual branding of area streets, landscaping, paved surfaces, signage, lighting and other improvements.

The work being recognized and awarded also expanded biking transit infrastructure by adding in-street bike lanes along Perimeter Summit Parkway. All of these improvements are part of the PCIDs’ ongoing commitment to build pedestrian and bike-friendly communities.

Over the past 15 years, the PCIDs have leveraged $31.2 million in the PCIDs self-taxing district funds in combination with $114.8 million in grants, and state and federal transportation monies to fund $146 million in area transportation, commuting, transit and alternative transportation improvements.

PEDS is a regional advocacy group for pedestrians. The PEDS Golden Shoe Award recognizes people, projects and places whose achievements will help transform the Metro Atlanta region into a great place to walk, as well as live work and play.

The Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCIDs) comprise both the Central (DeKalb) and Fulton Perimeter CID, these two self-taxing districts, operating as one entity, use their additional property taxes to fund or accelerate the funding of needed transportation and infrastructure improvements. The PCIDs are leading the charge to implement vital transportation projects that enhance mobility and improve quality of life across the region.
