Deal said in a statement that Burgess was an “incredible young man” who had a “bright future ahead of him.”

“This is a terrible loss for everyone in our organization and for anyone who knew him,” he added. “We are going to take some time to grieve and pay our respects to Mack and to the Burgess family. I ask that everyone bear with us as we take a break from the campaign to mourn a life ended much too soon.”

“Mack was well known in the office and around the state for his tireless work ethic, contagious passion, bold leadership and zest for life,” he added. “But more importantly, Mack was a loyal friend with a heart for service. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mack’s family and loved ones as they mourn his passing. We pray that they will find peace and comfort during this time of sadness and despair.”
