Riverside Drive Bridge Closure: GDOT Shares Detour Route

The closure, which will take place over 3 weekends in August, is needed for the interchange improvement project in Sandy Springs.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- By now, you are probably aware that the Georgia Department of Transportation will close the Riverside Drive bridge over Interstate 285 for three weekends in August.

Weather permitting, the closures will happen during the following dates next month: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5 to Monday, Aug. 8; 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12 to Aug. 15; and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19 to Monday, Aug. 22.

For motorists exiting I-285 westbound, coming from Coldstream Court, nearby residents, or vehicles traveling south on Riverside Drive from outside the perimeter:

To continue south on Riverside Drive, travel north on Riverside Drive to Heards Ferry Road. Turn right on Heards Ferry Road and continue to Mount Vernon Highway. Turn right on Mount Vernon Highway and continue to Riverside Drive. This route will lead drivers to Riverside Drive south of the bridge closure. To get to I-285 east, Fox Ridge Lane or Fair Oaks Manor, turn right on Riverside Drive.

For motorists exiting I-285 eastbound, coming from Fair Oaks Manor, Fox Ridge, Kairos Church, nearby residents, or vehicles traveling north on Riverside Drive from inside the perimeter:

To continue north on Riverside Drive, travel south on Riverside Drive to Mount Vernon Highway. Turn left onto Mount Vernon Highway. Continue on Mount Vernon Highway to Heards Ferry Road. Turn left onto Heards Ferry Road and continue to Riverside Drive. To take I-285 west or Coldstream Court, turn left onto Riverside Drive.

The closures are part of GDOT's efforts to improve the interchange, and officials believe the installation of roundabouts will greatly enhance the safety of the area.

Detour signs will be in place to help direct traffic, and motorists are cautioned to reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, pay attention and watch for workers.
