Riverside Drive Roundabouts: GDOT Releases New Rendering
Weather permitting, the project designed to improve a major interchange in Sandy Springs is expected to be completed in November.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- The Georgia Department of Transportation has released a new rendering of the roundabouts under construction at the Interstate 285 at Riverside Drive interchange in Sandy Springs.
Georgia DOT’s design-build team -- Baldwin Paving Company, Inc. & Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering -- has completed the design, and has been relocating utilities since February.
Major construction plans are expected to kick off this summer, GDOT said Monday.

Baldwin Paving Company is constructing roundabouts at both ramp intersections of the interchange. The existing configuration consists of one, 12-foot lane in both directions and traffic signals at the ramp termini. The signalized intersections will be converted into single lane roundabouts -- one at each intersection.
Each approach to the roundabout will be widened to two lanes, one used to enter the roundabout and one used as a right turn lane. The project also includes added sidewalks to both sides of the roadway along Riverside Drive and routine maintenance of the existing bridge over I-285.
Construction will take place both day and night. However, lane closures will only be in place on weeknights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and weekends from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. One travel lane will remain open at all times except during bridge maintenance work. At this point, all lanes in each direction will close and a detour will be used.
Motorists should exercise caution and slow down while driving through the work zone, as construction crews and equipment will be in close proximity to the roads.
