Riverside Drive Roundabouts To Open Monday

The project replaces the traffic signals at the ramp intersections at I-285 in Sandy Springs.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- It appears you will soon be able to utilize the new roundabouts at the ramp intersections of Interstate 285 at Riverside Drive in Sandy Springs.

According to the city, the final weekend bridge closures set for Aug. 26-29 will pave the way for the new roundabout configuration to be in place and operational for Monday morning's commute.

To help you figure out your way through these roundabouts, Sandy Springs police officers will be on site to monitor traffic flow.

"We are asking those who use the bridge as a travel path to please be aware of the change and plan for delays as everyone gets used to the traffic pattern," the city said.

After the roundabouts open to traffic, the remaining work will include paving, pavement markings, sidewalk construction, building the roundabout island, lighting installation, landscaping, final grading, grassing and dressing, said Georgia DOT spokesperson Annalysce Baker.

"Despite the recent rescheduling of this last bridge closure and opening the roundabouts, the project is still anticipated to be completed by November," she added.

Baldwin Paving Company is constructing the $5.6 million design-build roundabouts at both ramp intersections of the interchange. The previous configuration consists of one, 12-foot lane in both directions and traffic signals at the ramp termini. The signalized intersections will be converted into single lane roundabouts -- one at each intersection.

Each approach to the roundabout will be widened to two lanes, one used to enter the roundabout and one used as a right turn lane. The project also includes added sidewalks to both sides of the roadway along Riverside Drive and routine maintenance of the existing bridge over I-285.
