Riverwood Educator Named 2018 STAR ESOL Teacher
Schmidt has taught English learners for 20 years, 14 of them at Riverwood.

From Riverwood Int'l School: Riverwood International Charter School congratulates faculty member Mary Schmidt's selection by the Georgia Department of Education as a 2018 STAR English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher. Schmidt is one of only ten teachers statewide to be named a Georgia Department of Education STAR ESOL teacher. Started in 2016, the Star ESOL designation recognizes teachers who provide superior ESOL instruction in Georgia. Riverwood senior, Anh Tran, nominated Schmidt for the award. Both Tran and Schmidt attended State School Superintendent Richard Wood’s annual “Excellence in Achievement” reception on May 7 where the Georgia Board of Education honored all of the state’s winning students and teachers.
Schmidt has taught English learners for 20 years, 14 of them at Riverwood. She remarked “I am humbled and proud that I can represent Riverwood and Fulton County as a STAR ESOL teacher in Georgia."
ESOL is a state-funded instructional program for eligible English learners in grades K-12.
