Riverwood Holds Topping Out Ceremony For Classroom Addition
The three-story building will include 26 instructional units and counseling and administrative offices.
SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Riverwood International Charter School students and staff members recently held a topping out ceremony to commemorate a renovation project at the Sandy Springs institution.
Students, faculty and staff members as well as construction contractors watched the final beam rise above the three-story building and settle into its place.
The project, which is in its first phase, is an 115,000-square-foot classroom wing slated to accommodate growth at Riverwood. Included in the building will be 26 instructional units and counseling and administrative offices. The plan also calls for relocating the baseball field to make room for the building.

The projected completion date of Phase 1, funded by Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax revenue, is July 28, 2017. The plan will also improve the traffic flow for vehicles.
In the week leading up to the ceremony, the structural steel beam, painted white, occupied a table in the school’s media center.

Students, faculty, and staff made their way throughout the week to the library to sign the beam. Members of the Turner Construction project team also added their signatures. The beam carries more than 1,500 signatures, a time-capsule of sorts of the Raider community.
The school notes the white beam represents a successful new beginning for the Riverwood community. Another construction tradition is having an evergreen tree lashed to the beam. The tree symbolizes unity and strength through tough and challenging times, the school states.
