Riverwood House Sparkles In Sandy Springs Holiday Display
The mini-house, entitled "Van Gogh Raider!," is on display at City Springs.

From Riverwood International School: Riverwood International Charter School artists have helped to brighten the holidays by decorating a mini-house for the Sparkle Sandy Springs 2018 Holiday Event. The house, entitled “Van Gogh Raider!” is painted in the style of Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” masterpiece and depicts local Sandy Springs landmark street signs woven into an illuminated night sky and embraced by the branches of a three-dimensional Cypress tree. Riverwood was one of three local high schools who were asked to participate in the walkable mini-house display. It was Riverwood’s second year participating in the event, and once again, students from Riverwood’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) did the handiwork.
The six-foot tall wooden houses each are illuminated with lights. Notes Riverwood Visual & Performing Arts Department Chair & Instructional Lead, Dana Munson, “Our biggest challenge was getting the lights to adhere to the inside of the house. We finally had to use a staple gun and back the lights with aluminum foil so they would glow better from the outside. At the kick-off event it was amazing to watch the sun set and see the lights glowing.” Munson directed the painting, while Riverwood art teacher, Heather Meyer guided the students in creating the three-dimensional cypress tree and the lighting elements. Riverwood’s NAHS has 55 members, many of whom helped with the project. Billed as “magical,” the mini-houses are part of the Sparkle Sandy Springs 2018 Holiday Event, which kicked off on Sunday, December 2. The event included the city’s first ever Christmas tree lighting and Menorah lighting, as well as live music and food for free and for purchase. The houses will be on display at City Green at City Springs, 1 Galambos Way, through December 31.
