Riverwood Introduces Digital Design Course
The Epson Sure Color P5000 large format photographic printer is now part of the equipment available to art students.

From Riverwood Int'l School: Riverwood International Charter School's Art Department is pleased to announce two “big” new additions to its program. The Epson Sure Color P5000 large format photographic printer is now part of the equipment available to art students. Prior to using the printer, students will learn about the management of printing, and especially about how it relates to enlarging photographs. They no longer will need to send their artwork and photographs to outside printers, saving a great deal of time as well as money. According to Dana Munson, Riverwood Art Department Instructional Lead and Teacher, “Having a large format printer in- house really helps raise the bar for our students.” A grant from Fulton County Schools enabled the department to acquire the printer.
Riverwood is also debuting a new art curriculum in Digital Design. Students, using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, the highest industry standard software, will focus on “real world graphic designs to solve real world problems,” notes Munson. They will work with school organizations and even community entities to develop and then screen-print logos and designs. The goal is to provide students with high-level skills that can lead to potential careers in graphic design. Munson adds, “Learning to skillfully execute in Adobe Illustrator in high school will give these students a measurable leg-up in the field of design.” With 28 students already enrolled this fall, the new, two-year expansion program is obviously filling a void. The Digital Design class is a significant complement to the Drawing and Painting, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Jewelry/Metal Craft, and Film courses. Coursework is available at the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) levels, as well.
