This was the school’s first year participating in Positive Athlete Georgia, which is “a movement by high-character professional athletes tied to Georgia professional and collegiate sports teams to promote the benefits of ’positivity’ to young athletes,” the organization said on its website.

Athletes believe it’s “crucial to begin shaping the futures of young athletes for life skills beyond athletic competition and to learn how to give back to their community,” the organization goes on to state.

Three Raider student athletes also won the Positive Athlete of the Year award in their respective sports: Pascal Acree, tennis; Bayne Jarvis, cross country; and Danielle Jenkins, swimming.

Positive Athlete Georgia on Tuesday, May 5 hosted an awards ceremony for all north Fulton County award winners at Crosspoint Community Church in Roswell.

Accepting the School of the Year award for the Raiders were Principal Dr. Robert Shaw and Athletic Director Mike Santoro.

Positive Athlete Georgia accepted nominations during the school year from parents, teachers, and coaches to recognize student-athletes in 25 different high school sports “whose presence and attitude makes a positive impact on their team and school environment,” Riverwood said in its press release.

What makes the Positive Athlete Georgia program slightly different from other local and state awards is that the nominees were not necessarily the most valuable players as measured by records and statistics. Additionally, parents and teachers could participate in the nomination process.

Riverwood’s 2014-15 Positive Athlete Georgia nominees were: Jalen Miller, baseball; Keely Wallace, basketball cheerleading; Kohl Roberts, boys basketball; Leonard “Buck” Jenkins, boys basketball coach; Arynn Eady, girls basketball; Bayne Jarvis, boys cross country*; Owen McDaniel, boys cross country; Anna Hayden, girls cross country; Maggie Duncan, girls cross country; Jeff Hooks, football; Kian Smith, boys golf; Jaycie Emery, girls golf; Rachel Carlson, girls golf; Bayne Jarvis, boys lacrosse; Georgina Greenslade, girls lacrosse; Heather Berryman, girls lacrosse coach/swimming and diving coach; Mario Aguero, boys soccer; Maggie Duncan, girls soccer; Bari Steel, softball; Larson Hodge, boys swimming; Danielle Jenkins, girls swimming*; Pascal Acree, boys tennis*; Kiana Brooks, girls tennis; Anna Hayden, girls track; Elizabeth Graves, girls Track; Lauren Rasmus, girls track; Emily Smith, volleyball; and Taylor Wright, volleyball.
