Riverwood Names Teacher, Professional Of The Year

From Riverwood International Charter School: Congratulations to Jerome Dunson for being named Riverwood’s 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year and to Tami Walton for being named Riverwood’s 2017-18 Professional of the Year. The Riverwood faculty and staff nominated and voted for this year’s recipients. The honorees received their awards at a March faculty meeting and, as a surprise, had their families present in the auditorium to witness the presentations.

Jerome Dunson joined the Riverwood faculty in 2013 and teaches US History, International Affairs, and Economics. He works with students in the Career Technology Instruction (CTI) program, serves as Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, and is a member of the school’s Governance Council. Dunson, an Atlanta native, grew up in College Park and earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics with a minor in History at the University of West Georgia. Outside of school, Dunson is an avid basketball enthusiast and movie connoisseur, and enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter. When asked about the best part of his work, Dunson replied, “[it is] being able to make a difference academically and socially in the lives of students as they transition into young adulthood. I am truly thankful to be able to work in an environment with such wonderful students and professionals, doing a service I’m passionate about.” Principal Chuck Gardner added, “His students receive top notch instruction every day and his calm demeanor is a stabilizing force for so many students.”

Tami Walton joined the Riverwood Administrative Team in 2016. She is responsible for all of the school finances, including receiving and disbursing funds, and maintaining the cost center and local school budgets. Walton came to Fulton County via Cobb County Schools where she worked for 12 years as a Bookkeeper. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Walton holds a degree in Human Services from Mercer University. She is currently working to complete a Master’s Degree in School Counseling. Married with three children, she also enjoys time with her 10 year old Shih Tzu named Gizmo. About Walton, Principal Gardner stated, “Tami Walton always has a smile on her face and stays calm under pressure. Her patience is incredible and she is a comforting presence to everyone.”
