Riverwood Student Named National Merit Seminfinalist

David Goldfarb is one of about 16,000 semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Riverwood International Charter School student David Goldfarb who, based on his stellar scores on the PSAT taken during his junior year, has been designated as a semifinalist in the prestigious National Merit competition.

In September, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

To advance to the finalist round each semifinalist must have a record of high academic performance, be endorsed and recommended by their school’s principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier qualifying test performance.

Additionally, each semifinalist will complete a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s self-descriptive essay and information about his or her participation and leadership in school and community activities.
