Riverwood Student Receives Full Scholarship To Play Football

Porter Sanford V, who was recruited to play quarterback, will take his talents to Alabama A&M University.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Riverwood International Charter School's Raider Porter Sanford V recently was awarded a full athletic scholarship to play football for Alabama A&M University.

Porter was recruited to play quarterback for the NCAA Division I school competing in the SWAC Conference.

Sanford, also endearingly known as "PJ", has been heavily involved in sports during his four years at Riverwood, playing football, basketball and baseball as a Raider on both junior varsity and varsity teams.

Porter has received awards for his athletic involvement, including Most Improved, Coach's Award, Most Valuable Player, Neighborhood Newspaper's Athlete of the Week (2014) and the Burlsworth Character Award.

He is also a three time winner of the North Georgia Touchdown Club's Offensive Player of the Week. As a team leader, Sanford served as co-captain on his Raider football and basketball teams.

When reflecting on Porter's abilities on the field, Riverwood's head football coach Ben Stready said Sanford is "the smartest player that I have ever coached and a student of the game."

Porter is active in the community and has been a member of Riverwood's FCA and FCCLA. He is also the president of the Youth Group at Cascade United Methodist Church and has been a speaker for the church's Martin Luther King Jr. memorial day.
