From Riverwood Intl School: Riverwood International Charter School freshman, Jada Sweeting, has joined the Harvard Debate Council Diversity Project’s inaugural class. Sweeting joins 24 students from metro Atlanta schools who were also simultaneously accepted to the Harvard Debate Council’s summer residential program at Harvard College. The students, whose detailed applications indicated that they represent the three pillars of the program, Scholarship, Leadership and Culture, will meet twice a month for six months. Over the course of the six months they will cover a rigorous curriculum centered on critical thinking, research, analysis, and academic debate. They will also participate in leadership training, political activism, and cultural exploration focusing on the embodiment of the principle, “Lift as you Climb.” Harvard instructors will provide the intensive training to prepare the Diversity Project members for their study at Harvard College in July. Sweeting, a member of Riverwood’s Student Government Association, serves as President of the Ninth Grade Class. She is also a Raider cheerleader and a member of the Raider Community Service Club. As a hobby, Sweeting creates tutorial/DIY videos for her YouTube channel. Her mother is Shamona Harrell, Riverwood's Head Counselor. Harvard Debate Council Diversity Program is an Atlanta-based diversity pipeline program designed to raise the young social and political voices in urban Atlanta and matriculate African-American students into the Harvard Debate Council’s summer residential program at Harvard College in Cambridge, MA.
