SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Riverwood International Charter School art teacher Dana Munson is the recipient of the 2018 Outstanding National Art Honor Society Sponsor Award. This honor, awarded annually by the National Art Educators Association (NAEA), recognizes outstanding leadership of an NAEA member who sponsors an exceptional National Art Honor Society (NAHS) chapter.

Munson, Riverwood Art Department Instructional Lead and Teacher, attended the 2019 NAEA National Convention in Boston where she received the award. She was also recognized for this achievement at the Georgia Art Educators Association convention, which took place on Jekyll Island this fall.

Riverwood’s National Art Honor Society has 55 members and actively participates in numerous showcases, projects and community events. The organization recently designed a mini-house for the Sparkle Sandy Springs 2018 Holiday Event at City Springs. The Society also contributes to the community via social action and fundraising. Their signature fundraiser for the past five years has been the “Team Summer Challenge” to raise funds for children with cancer.

Munson recognizes that leading an exemplary National Art Honor Society chapter “is really a team effort and isn’t just one person. I am proud to represent everyone involved in NAHS, but I can’t honestly say it is anything unique thing that I did by myself to earn this award. I am truly proud of our NAHS and what we have accomplished over the last seven years, and this award is a validation of all the hard work that each member and sponsor has put into our honor society.”

This is not Munson’s first award. The Georgia chapter of NAEA honored Munson with the 2018 Dr. Helen Fleming Stone Distinguished Teacher of the Year award. She is also the recipient of the 2011 and 2013 Southeastern Art Educator of the Year awards. Founded in 1947, the National Art Education Association is the leading professional membership organization exclusively for visual arts educators.
