Riverwood Teacher, Students Win National Art Honor Society Awards

20 Riverwood students participated in an Art Throwdown, and attended a variety of workshops.

From Riverwood International Charter School: Riverwood International Charter School art students had an enriching and exciting two days at the 28th Annual National Art Honor Society (NAHS) conference. Held in early March 2018 at Columbus State University, the 20 Riverwood students participated in an Art Throwdown, attended a variety of workshops, and glimpsed the possibilities of life as a college art student.

The Raider artists won first place in a collaborative painting project, advanced to the finals in “the Great Face Off” challenge, and enjoyed entering pieces in several other competitions. A highlight of the weekend was seeing their teacher, Dana Munson, receive the 2018 Dr. Helen Fleming Stone Distinguished Teacher of the Year award.

Munson said “I am so honored to be the second recipient of the distinguished teacher of the year award. Although I was surprised and humbled to be recognized by my peers, the best part of the evening was that my students were with me. It was a special evening.” Dr. Stone was a Georgia art educator for 49 years. She was also a gifted sculptor and potter.

Stone started the Helen Fleming Stone Foundation and sold her own artwork to create a scholarship fund for National Art Honor Society students.

The State NAHS Conference, taught by Art Educators, Professors, and Museum Educators from across the state, brings high school artists together for not only for instruction but also for a chance to exhibit their work. Additionally, students had the opportunity to have their portfolios reviewed by Columbus State faculty.
