Sandy Springs, GA -- The Sandy Springs City Council last week approved the acquisition of a former gas station in an effort to spur economic redevelopment to the northern end of Roswell Road.

Council members unanimously voted to buy the former Shell Station at 8475 Roswell Road for $630,000 from Triton Enterprises Corporation.
City Attorney Cecil McClendon told Council members the city created a Limited Liability Company to enter into the sale and purchase agreement at “arms length” with the property owner. The initial appraisal came in at $688,000, but McClendon said the city was able to negotiate a lower purchase price.

Sandy Springs officials have performed all the necessary inspections and an environmental assessment on the property. McClendon also stated all of the fuel tanks have been removed under the supervision of the Environmental Protection Division.
District 2 Council member Ken Dishman, who represents the area where the former gas station is situated, praised the city for its proactive efforts to acquire the parcel -- a move he said was “very meaningful for our north end neighborhood” and business owners.
The purchase, he added, could be the spark needed to ignite a redevelopment phase along Roswell Road’s northern corridor.
Mayor Rusty Paul agreed, adding the city had been “verbally assaulted” about the property’s condition at a recent meeting with stakeholders in the area. The only way to make the property ”pretty,” Paul added, is for Sandy Springs to take action itself.
